The Ignatius Sanchos Centre

The Ignatious Sanchos Centre is a development education facility located within the grounds of Grendon Hall and was the first of its kind in the county, forming part of a network of similar centres across the UK, all raising the profile of global issues such as trade justice, sustainable development and human rights, and encouraging positive local action for global change.

The centre offers a range of services to schools and other education settings including curriculum resources and training for teachers. It also co-ordinates information on external funding, resources and accreditation opportunities for schools and youth groups in the county and provides support for school-linking, encouraging friendships and learning opportunities between schools.

The centre is named after a freed slave who campaigned for the abolition of slavery. Ignatius Sanchos was employed by the Montagu family of Kettering, who helped him to gain an education and to set up a grocer's business in London as well as to develop his talents as a writer in musician.

He died in 1780, having made his mark as an African born into slavery who wanted to use his abilities on behalf of his people.

The work of the centre will have an annual theme - for 2007 to 2008, the theme is 'global greed means local need'.

The Centre provides a service to schools and youth groups in the County by providing:-

- Information on international linking and training programmes
- The Duke of Edinburgh International Award
- School linking
- Workshops and global issues
- Resources for the curriculum
- Support for fair traded schools
- External funding opportunities international activity
