NEW EDUCATION CENTRE LAUNCHED

A new development education centre aimed at raising the profile of global issues in Northamptonshire schools will be officially opened this week (Tuesday 13th November) at Northamptonshire County Council's Grendon Hall.

The development education centre will be the first of its kind in the county and will be part of a network of similar centres across the UK, all raising the profile of global issues such as trade justice, sustainable development and human rights, and encouraging positive local action for global change.

The centre will offer a range of services to schools and other education settings including curriculum resources and training for teachers. It will also co-ordinate information on external funding, resources and accreditation opportunities for schools and youth groups in the county and provide support for school-linking, encouraging friendships and learning opportunities between schools.

The centre will be known as the Ignatius Sanchos Centre, named after a freed slave who campaigned for the abolition of slavery. Ignatius Sanchos was employed by the Montagu family of Kettering, who helped him to gain an education and to set up a grocer's business in London as well as to develop his talents as a writer in musician.

He died in 1780, having made his mark as an African born into slavery who wanted to use his abilities on behalf of his people.

Councillor Joan Kirkbride, county council cabinet member for children and young people said: "This new development education centre will be the first of its kind in Northamptonshire and will become the focus for much of the global dimension work in the county

"It's important that young people of all ages in the county have the opportunity to learn about global issues and the relationship between Northamptonshire and the UK and the rest of the world."

The work of the centre will have an annual theme - for 2007 to 2008, the theme will \ be 'global greed means local need'. To launch this theme and the centre itself, a Fair Trade exhibition has been organised aimed at introducing schools to a variety of ethical and Fairtrade suppliers as well as giving them information about how to become a Fairtrade school.

The centre will be officially opened on Tuesday 13th November by county council chief executive Katherine Kerswell and the Mayor of Wellingborough.
