THE IGNATIUS SANCHOS CENTRE OPENS

The Ignatius Sanchos Centre is a brand new Development Education Centre based at Grendon Hall in Northamptonshire. Ignatius Sanchos was a freed slave who worked for the Montagu family of Northamptonshire. He went on to become famous for his fight against slavery and as an author and musician.

The centre was formally opened on the 13th November 2007 by Kathrine Kerswell, Chief Executive of Northamptonshire County Council and The Mayor of Wellingborough, Cllr. Partridge-Underwood.

A representative of the Montagu Family attended and welcomed continuing links between Broughton House and the Centre.

Rohini Cardwell from the Regional Global Dimension Network congratulated the County Council on being the first local authority to have a Development Education Centre.

Nicky Taylor from the Black History Association spoke about the importance of promoting a strong positive image of the contribution made by Black people in history. The BHA are launching ‘The Walter Tull’ curriculum materials in the near future and offered copies to the Centre.

Over seventy people including - Elected Members from the County Council and The Borough Councils, The Local Authority, Duke of Edinburgh Award, The British Council, Schools, Charities and the Local community attended.

The day also included a Fair Trade market place and school inset training and a group of young people from the C & YPS, Race Equality Team gave a presentation to the invited guests.

The Centre will provide a service to schools and youth groups in the County by providing:-

- Information on international linking and training programmes
- The Duke of Edinburgh International Award
- School linking
- Workshops and global issues
- Resources for the curriculum
- Support for fair traded schools
- External funding opportunities international activity
